Annual Winter Group Show
Since graduating from the Alberta College of Art and Design Janet Lowry has worked professionally as a printmaking artist in the medium of etching.
Her work is a highly abstracted response to landscape and nature, in particular to the prairie landscape of Saskatchewan, where she was born and raised, and of Alberta, where she now lives and works.
Strongly influenced by American Abstract Expressionism, my work is a highly abstracted response to landscape and nature. It is prairie landscape, in particular, that I respond to.
The imagery is informed by harsh light with dark shadows, along with the open space and relationship of land to sky. It is with these elements and the quality of light that nature reveals the subtle colours and textures found in the prairie environment.
It is interesting to me how landscape and nature, in subtle and mysterious ways, feed the need of man to contemplate his place in the universe.
